One of the great strengths of our club is our club sailing program. This provides an opportunity for members of all experience levels, including novices, to get out on the water regularly. We do day sailing, weekend and longer club sails. Club sails are skippered by experienced members who are approved by the training officer. They provide an opportunity for social fun, visiting interesting locales on and off the water, practicing sailing skills or simply plowing through the whitecaps on a lovely sunny afternoon. Members with no skipper aspirations can have a very full sailing life taking advantage of our many club sails.
Weekend Club Sailing
Dinner rafted up
Each season, we organize several weekend club sails that allow members to develop cruising skills, anchoring in creeks and coves or tying up for the night in a distant marina. This is when prospective skippers learn:
- navigation and weather planning
- provisioning
- anchoring
- rafting up
- arriving in unfamiliar harbors and marinas
- refueling and pump-out
- getting back home on time for the work week
Full Moon Club Sailing
On the Friday and Saturday nearest the full moon, every month April through November, we conduct evening full moon sails.
These outings allow members to enjoy a sunset on the water followed by a beautiful full moon rise. We teach night navigation and discuss basics of night vision and the illusions that can occur in the dark.
Mostly, we enjoy a quiet evening on the water. These trips provide a training opportunity so that members are familiar with return to our home marina should events during a day sail force an unplanned night return.
DelMarVa Circumnavigation
In 2018, 2019 and 2022, we took two of our boats on a joint 7-day circumnavigation of the DelMarVa peninsula. This will be an annual event when we have enough participants to crew the boats.
